Why U of I?

We pride ourselves on being nationally recognized for providing an outstanding education without breaking the bank.  Our Renewable Materials major is rated as the most affordable B.S. program in the United States for wood science and wood products/pulp and paper technology programs by College Calc. Our Forestry program is ranked 9th in the country by College Factual's 2018 "Best for the Money" rankings. Interested in Rangeland Conservation? Our program is rated the 8th best in the U.S. for range science and management degrees by universities.com, and our Fire Ecology and Management degree has been offered for over 40 years; the nation's oldest and most intensive fire ecology and management program.

We provide a "hands-on" approach, and our students work directly with faculty in numerous laboratory and outdoor settings located just minutes from the U of I's Moscow Campus. Our students utilize the Pitkin Forest Nursery and one of the only Fire Combustion labs located on a university campus in the U.S.  Many of our courses are taught in the field on the 8,500-acre U of I Experimental Forest, as well as the McCall Field Campus and on thousands of acres of Idaho rangelands at Rock Creek Ranch. Enhanced outdoor learning opportunities exist for the daring such as the Semester In The Wild and CNR Summer Camp programs.

Our faculty provide abundant opportunities for undergraduate resource, and our extensive relationships with private industry, government agencies, and non-profit organizations across the state and region provide our students unique access to internships and future employment.
