Greg Hayward: “Science delivery and operationalizing conservation in management of federal working lands”

Greg Hayward, Regional Wildlife Ecologist, Alaska Region US Forest Service and Adjunct Associate Professor, University of Wyoming.

Greg joined the National Forest System in 1999 when issues of species conservation, managing for ecological integrity, and incorporating science into forest planning challenged many National Forests. Previously Greg served as faculty at Univ. of Wyoming building a collaborative team of students examining problems ranging from the ecological influence of invasive lake trout on Yellowstone Lake, response of red-backed voles to landscape boundaries, continent-wide patterns of boreal owl habitat use, and monitoring of Amur tiger in the Russian Far East. During his graduate studies at the Univ. of Idaho Greg and his wife Pat built partnerships with biologists throughout the Rockies to facilitate field studies and spent most of 6 years doing field research in the Frank Church wilderness. Greg’s approach to integrate science and management models mentorship by cherished colleagues Oz Garton and John Wiens whose examples motivate his work on policy such as regulations to prevent bird mortality in vault toilets, revision of the USFS Planning Rule, and evaluation of at-risk species.
