Meet the Dean

Meet Kurt Pregitzer

Dean Pregitzer came to the University of Idaho after serving as professor and chair of the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science at the University of Nevada. He also served as director of Michigan Technological University’s Ecosystem Science Center. Dean Pregitzer received his Ph.D. in Forest Ecology from the University of Michigan in 1981. His distinguished career includes more than 200 refereed papers and 15 book chapters – making him the most highly cited faculty member at the University of Idaho.

Dean Pregitzer’s academic interests reside in plant ecology, ecosystem science and sustainable ecosystem management. His passion for academics is student-driven—he has trained over 40 graduate students and several post-doctoral scholars. He has served as an associate editor for Ecology, Canadian Journal of Forest Research, Tree Physiology, Journal of Ecology and Ecological Monographs.

In 2004, the Thompson Institute of Scientific Information identified the world’s most highly cited authors and placed him on its list of Highly Cited Researchers, comprised of less than one-half of one percent of all publishing researchers across all fields of science. In 2002, he received the Barrington Moore Memorial Award from the Society of American Foresters for Outstanding Accomplishments in the Advancement of Forest Biology. He also has served as a competitive research program manager for both the Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
