Planning for Grants

1) Find Funding

Check out the CLASS Funding Opportunities page.

Attend a Pivot Table Training offered by Corporate and Foundation Relations or meet with your Associate Dean to identify funding strategies.

Government and Funding Agencies and Corporations and Foundations

*Note some calls for proposals will only allow one proposal from an institution, so be sure to check in early with the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP). Also, check out the list of potential corporate and foundation partners.

Talk to Your Department Chair

Let your department chair know what you are considering applying for and keep them in the loop particularly if this would shift your position description or have space or teaching load implications. They will also need some lead time to sign off on the proposal before it is submitted.

2) Create a Timeline

3) Ensure Appropriate Review

  • Be sure you refer to the Office of Research Assurances website if you are doing work that involves Human Participants. Make sure that all people who will be working on your grant are appropriately trained on all protocols you will be using and have completed the CITI training.
  • If you are working with graduate students or colleagues, be certain to have clear and frank discussions about contributions, authorship, and funding at the outset of the project. Better yet, once a plan of responsibility and contribution credit is established, formalize it in an email.

Grant Writing Assistance

The Office of Research and Economic Development has a Proposal Development Specialist available to assist faculty and staff with their proposals.

4) Submit the Grant/Proposal

5) If Funded...

  • Do the work.
  • Submit agency technical reports on time.
  • Monitor your budget; work with your department/school financial assistant.
  • Publish your results.
  • Tell us about your work! Participate in the CLASS Research Showcase, share your successes with your Chair and the CLASS Dean’s Office Marketing and Communications Team.
