Funding Opportunities

Members of CLASS tenure-line faculty, clinical faculty, instructors and graduate students are eligible for travel or virtual attendance (i.e., registration costs) support to attend organized regional, national and international conferences to present, discuss or perform original research or creative work. Funds are also available for professional development opportunities directly relevant to the person’s position description. This fund intends to supplement travel support available through the individual’s department.

Due dates and timelines are as follows:

• Deadline October 2, Travel complete prior to May 30.
• Deadline December 4, Travel complete prior to June 30.
• Deadline February 5, Travel complete prior to June 30.
• Deadline April 1, Travel complete prior to September 30.

Funds will be granted for participation in a maximum of one conference or meeting of scholarly or professional societies, subject to the availability of funds. Faculty, post-docs and graduate students will be given priority in that order. Additionally, individuals who have not received CLASS funding via internal grant support in the last three years will also be prioritized. In addition, individuals from departments with limited or no travel funding will also receive priority consideration, followed by applications that include department matching funds.

The College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences is pleased to welcome applications for the George and Mary Ann Macinko Faculty Development Award. These funds are meant to be used by faculty to further their professional development. Funding requests are accepted for any amount up to $500. Acceptable expenses include registration fees and travel expenses to participate in professional development opportunities. Deadline: April 15, 2024.

The CLASS Summer Grant Program offers up to $2,500 for travel, equipment, supplies, or undergraduate or graduate research assistance (per HR guidelines) to create a sustainable research or creative project. The grant can also be used by the PI as summer salary to fund the writing of a grant to a federal granting agency for the 2024-2025 submission period. The grants are intended to support tenure-track and tenured faculty to do one or more of the following:

1. Conduct research that will further scholarship and directly lead to a publication or creative achievement; or
2. Write and submit a grant proposal to a federal granting agency in 2024-2025; or
3. Establish a collaborative research or creative project with a team of faculty that includes at least one member from another discipline, and that leads either to the submission of a grant proposal to a federal granting agency or will further scholarship and directly lead to a publication or creative achievement.

The fund supports the study of any subject connected with the history of the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho or Montana, for which a portion of the chronology occurred during the territorial and early statehood period.

The committee awards subventions for research, preservation of archival and manuscript collections, student assistantships, travel, exhibitions, conferences, or acquisitions of rare books, manuscripts, artifacts, photocopies and images. Faculty members are not eligible for salary stipends.

Olsson Early Career Research Fellowship program aims to help recently hired faculty develop scholarly/creative programs that promote research and creative activities in the humanities, arts, and social sciences that will attract outside funding and/or result in publications, patents, or exhibitions/performances. Download Document

The CLASS Undergraduate Collaborative Research Key Grant is designed to encourage collaboration between CLASS faculty and undergraduate students on scholarly or creative projects, including articles or books, conferences, performances, productions, workshops, travel, and professional development experiences.

Proposals are due on Oct 30, 2023 (with a budget review by Oct. 23, 2023) for the fall cycle, and April 5, 2024 (with a budget review by March 29, 2024). CLASS is accepting applications for funding to support Open Access Publishing and indexing costs for CLASS faculty authors. Please note that the U of I Library also offers Open Access Publishing Funds and faculty should first apply there prior to pursuing this funding source.

What do they do: The International Programs Office (IPO) pursues grants that bring international students, scholars, mid-career professionals, teachers and community leaders to U of I for training, teaching and/or academic study. Grants range from five days to two years.

IPO collaborates with U of I colleges and departments works closely with a number of partners. These include:

• Center for Intercultural Education and Development (CIED) at Georgetown University
• Institute of International Education (IIE)
• International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX)
• Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State
• U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)

Who should contact them: CLASS faculty or administrators who are interested in partnering with IPO on grants.

When to contact: As early in the process as possible. This is especially critical if you want IPO to have a significant role in the writing of the grant and/or have IP staff serve as PIs or Co-PIs on the project.

Who qualifies for sabbatical leave? Members of the UI faculty with tenure at the time of sabbatical leave, and the rank of senior instructor or above, or the equivalent of such rank, may be granted sabbatical leave after six full academic years of service at UI or after six full academic years have elapsed since the faculty member’s most recent sabbatical leave at UI.

What they do: Corporate and Foundation Relations helps U of I faculty and staff find and apply for funding from corporations and foundations for everything from creative works to research projects. CFR also provides profiles on particular foundations and corporations and offers grant-writing assistance, training and other resources.
