CALS Honors Outstanding Students, Faculty and Staff

MOSCOW, Idaho –– The University of Idaho College of Agricultural and Life Sciences honored its outstanding students, faculty and staff Monday, April 25, at its annual banquet at Moscow.
The college's outstanding students included:
- CALS Outstanding Freshman – Amanda Wilder, a food science major from Meridian, Idaho.
- CALS Outstanding Sophomore – Sarah Polkinghorne, a clothing, textiles and design major from Moscow.
- CALS Outstanding Junior – Kara Kleppen, a biological and agricultural engineering major from Outlook, Mont.
- CALS Outstanding Senior – Caroline Campbell, a food science major from Moscow. She also won the college's outstanding sophomore award in 2009.
The college also announced the selection of its outstanding teacher and adviser during the banquet.
Matt Doumit, an associate professor of animal and veterinary science, won the R.M. Wade Excellence in Teaching Award. Doumit joined the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences faculty in 2008 after 12 years at Michigan State University. His research focuses on improving beef quality and improving beef palatability.
Jeff Bohlscheid, a School of Food Science assistant professor, was named the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences outstanding academic advisor. He joined the University of Idaho faculty in 2007 after earning his doctorate in food science from Washington State University. His interests include undergraduate food science education and research on enology, culinology, molecular gastronomy, food fermentation and flavor chemistry.
The college also honored outstanding staff members in the following categories:
- Office support staff: Gayle Gleason, School of Food Science.
- Service/maintenance staff: Greg Steffens, CALS Computing Services Department.
- Technical staff: Leslie Baker, Plant, Soil and Entomological Sciences Department.
- General Support Staff: Ron Richard, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Department Vandal Meats.
The college enrolled 1,331 students in the fall 2010 semester, a 10 percent increase over 2009. The college employs more than 400 faculty and staff on the University of Idaho's Moscow campus, at University of Idaho Extension offices in 42 Idaho counties and at research and extension centers statewide.
The annual spring banquet drew nearly 200 members of the university community to the Student Union Building Ballroom for a dinner that featured prime rib donated by Agri Beef Co.
