M.F.A. Requirements

The following is a guide to program-specific requirements for current students.

MFA, Studio Art

The University of Idaho’s M.F.A. is a 60-credit concept-oriented, studio degree designed for students eager to explore INTEGRATED approaches to art making and design. Applicants are considered based on the strength of their portfolio and potential rather than a focus on a specific medium. The program fosters exploration in a number of theoretical and practice-based contexts in a vibrant and creative atmosphere.

To apply for this 3-year M.F.A. program, visit Graduate Admissions. The Priority Admission Review Deadline is January 15th, but applications will be considered until April 1st. Admission requirements for the M.F.A. include a minimum 3.0 GPA and an undergraduate degree in a Design or Studio Art area, or its equivalent, with at least 60 undergraduate credits in studio courses, and 12 in art history or a related field.

Application materials needed for this program include:

1. Curriculum Vitae

2. Statement of Purpose

This 1-2 page document should introduce and express goals for expanding creative and professional practice through the program. This will be uploaded as a “Statement of Career Objectives” through the Graduate School Application Process.

3. Digital portfolio of personal work

Applicants will upload a digital portfolio showcasing 15 to 20 creative works (details, varying views, and links to videos clips are welcome), the majority of which should present creative focus and showcase a body of work from which advanced creative pursuit is sought. Identify the title, size, media used, and date of each work presented. To upload this content easily, please create this portfolio as a PowerPoint or collection of image files and save as a .pdf. We also accept portfolio website links in place of this compiled digital portfolio; if this is your chosen approach, upload the file including a weblink(s) where you are asked to upload your portfolio in the online application.

4.  Three letters of recommendation

5. Application Fees

6. Official transcripts and academic credentials

7. TOEFL scores are required by international students. GRE scores are not required for applicants in this program.

Priority deadline for full applications is January 15th. The admissions process closes April 1st.
