Building Metrics Labeling Tool

The free Building Metrics Labeling tool supplies you with an easy way to view and share performance information related to your building's energy usage by generating a one-page graphic performance report. This report illustrates a building's Energy Use Intensity (EUI), ENERGY STAR® Score, Walk Score® for amenities within a half-mile radius and the percent of daylit floor area. Energy use in buildings has become an increasingly important topic over the past several years with the continued development of national goals to reduce energy consumption. The aim of the BML project and graphic sheet is to promote awareness and highlight the value of building energy efficiency and environmental quality, and to parallel national building performance disclosure trends.

To use the Building Metrics Labeling tool, you will need to create an IDL account.

The four metrics illustrated in the graphic sheets are explained in greater detail below.

  • The EUI (Energy Use Intensity) Score is a measurement of the annual building energy usage divided by the total building square footage (kBtu/ft2-yr). This metric provides an annual measurement of building energy consumption relative to its size. The lower the EUI score, the lower the amount of energy the building uses. This score allows for an equivalent comparison of building energy usage with other buildings of the same type.
  • The ENERGY STAR® Score is calculated via ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager at www.ENERGYSTAR.gov and is an indication of building energy performance compared to peer facilities nationwide. A score of 50 is the ENERGY STAR established baseline, indicating typical energy usage for the specified building type. A score of 75 is the established ENERGY STAR high performance baseline, and buildings at or above this score are eligible for ENERGY STAR certification.
  • Note, this metric is based on user input and does not signify ENERGY STAR Certification. Please see www.energystar.gov for more information related to ENERGY STAR Certification.
  • The Walk Score® is calculated through www.walkscore.com and indicates the proximity of resources including shopping, schools, entertainment, restaurants, housing, and others within a ½ mile walking radius of the building. The metric ranges from 1-100 (100 being most walkable). Although not directly related to building energy performance, this score plays an important role in the reduction of overall energy usage and CO2 emissions. It can also have a great impact on the health and well being of the individual.
  • The Daylit Area is a measurement which illustrates the percentage of the floor area that is daylit. This measurement reflects the amount of natural indoor light provided, which can reduce electrical lighting energy use as well as improve the indoor environment for occupants. This measurement does not take into account visual comfort and glare issues, but rather is intended to identify the potential quantity of daylight that is available within a space.
