We are now one step closer to choosing a new leader for our flagship university. The State Board of Education announced Monday five finalists in our presidential search. These qualified candidates will tour Idaho, and I hope you have a chance to meet them. View bios, resumes and tour schedules online.

The Board of Regents is poised to make a selection announcement in November.

The new president will take the reins of an outstanding institution of higher education. At the University of Idaho, we’re proud of the education students receive and the opportunities they are prepared for after graduation. Whether they are turning cow manure into biodegradable plastic or studying the response of mule deer to the reduction of coyotes in Southeastern Idaho, our alumni recognize the value in their education and are using it for great things. In addition, they are being compensated commensurately.

The 2013-14 PayScale.com College Salary Report shows UI graduates earn higher starting salaries right out of college than graduates at other Idaho institutions, and up to $9,000 more on average at mid-career.

This is great news not only for Vandals in the job market but for those entering it. The university has many assets available to help facilitate that crossover. This week the UI Career Center hosted a job fair featuring recruiters from various disciplines including computer science, math and management information systems. The Career Center offers resume help, interview tools and more to students and alumni. Visit their LinkedIn page and find Vandals working in fields in your area.

GO VANDALS!

Then and Now: Vandal Marching Band

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night could keep Robert Spevacek’s Vandal Marching Band off the field.

In 1963, when Idaho took on the University of Washington, the team used giant snowballs to mark the hidden yard lines to stay in form.

Or in the 1980s, at a high school marching contest in Spokane, Wash. - there was an inch of rain on the field, but that didn’t keep the auxiliary team from doing splits as part of its act.

“You have to think, ‘What is the educational value?’” he said. “It may not be your comfort zone, but people depend on you.”

There was little that wasn’t worth sacrificing in Spevacek’s years of directing the Vandal Marching Band from 1968 to 1978. This mantra hasn’t changed, as the 200-person fleet continues to be a staple at university events today.

A House Divided in Crimson and Gold

Dan Lawhead’s family is split. Half sport silver and gold and half don crimson and gray. It is this amenable split that allows him to fly Vandal colors with pride in his Moscow Baskin Robbins store, while he roars like a Coug.

With the return of the Battle of the Palouse, it was a family affair for Dan to cheer on both the Vandals and Cougars during the University of Idaho versus Washington State University football game.

“When there’s a big success at either school, it’s a boost to the entire community,” said Dan.

Joe Knows ... Vandals Who Give

During Homecoming week, students and friends had many opportunities to give back to their community. Canned food donation sites were set up across campus and within the community. In just four days, 1,450 pounds of food were collected. Donations will go to help local Moscow food banks at Troy Food Bank and Trinity Baptist Church. The University of Idaho also partnered with the Red Cross, and 50 pints of blood were donated.
