What is the War on Hunger?

The War on Hunger is a global issue pertaining to the right to life, human survival, sustainable communities and the promotion of healthy societies to enhance the quality of life. The problem of world hunger can be solved in our lifetime and land grant institutions like the University of Idaho are stepping forward to breakdown cultural and political barriers through awareness, education, advocacy and fundraising.

Our nationwide engagement on this issue started in November of 2005 at a National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC) meeting where representatives from Auburn University unveiled its partnership with the World Food Program in an effort to replicate their success in other land grant institutions across the nation. In February, five representatives from the University of Idaho attended a War on Hunger Summit sponsored by Auburn to learn how we could join the global fight against food insecurities and unnecessary loss of life due to hunger related issues.

The goals of the War on Hunger student led initiative are four-fold including 1) Hunger awareness, 2) Advocacy, 3) Academics and 4) Fundraising.

1. Teaching and learning goal

The War on Hunger effort speaks to the strategies outlined in this goal through interdisciplinary teams focused on solving complex learning tasks. The issues and solutions to world hunger are only simple in that we have enough food to feed our population. The complexities surrounding the process revolve around economic, political, trade, labor, education and cultural aspects.

2. Scholarly and creative activity goal

The University is strategically positioned to address the underlying causes of hunger and sustainability through scientific, economic, environmental, and political collaboration of students, faculty and administration. The initiatives of the student-led War on Hunger promote an environment to increase faculty and student engagement in interdisciplinary research? and actions. The national effort among the initial twenty-nine Universities across the nation strengthens and builds our resources for research, modes of discovery and addresses issues of importance to the citizens, government, economy and environment in the State of Idaho.

3. Outreach and engagement goal

The War on Hunger initiatives and partnerships promote the connections between the public, private and non-profit sectors while they enhance academics, discovery and creativity to solve a global issue which effects the quality of life, the health of our economies and societies as a whole.

4. Organization, culture and climate goal

The student lead initiatives present the community with opportunities to advance strategically within our own organization as we develop relationships of openness and collaboration among students, faculty and administration.
