Facilities
Students have the opportunity to practice their skills in a variety
theatre venues, featuring state-of-the-art lighting and sound
systems and fully-equipped shots for set and costume design.
Hartung
Theatre
The 417-seat Hartung Theatre, built in 1973, is an intimate,
elegant space in which to experience theatre. It is one
of two main stages for school year productions, and is also
the home to Idaho Repertory Theatre, UI's resident professional
summer theatre company.
The
theatre features a semi-thrust proscenium stage, which was
recently equipped with ETC digital lighting. The dimmer
per system is controlled by computer console. The stage
is trapped and features an orchestra pit. A double-purchase
counterweight system serves the fly space. There are two
vomitory entrances. Five catwalks provide plenty of positions
for lighting. The back-of-house includes fully-equipped
shops for both set and costume construction, prop storage,
dressing rooms and makeup studios. The front-of-house features
two small galleries for display of production designs and
a spacious lobby that functions as an art gallery during
production runs. Local pianists provide pre-show music on
a vintage grand piano.
Kiva
Theatre
Our second main stage venue is the Kiva Theatre, configured
as theatre-in-the-round an audience of 120. The theatre
is supported by ETC/per circuit system, a Horizon controller,
the Hartung Theatre's inventory of lumenaires, technobeams
and a portable digital sound system.
The Arena
The Arena is a 50-seat performance
studio managed and operated by students for showcasing the artistic
visions of theatre students for black box theatre production.
The Student Theatre Organization's Arena Series is a four-production
season of contemporary, often experimental work.
Shoup Hall
The department's home base is where faculty/administrative
offices are located as well as, performance/rehearsal studios,
design labs and a student lounge. There is also a computer lab
available.
