The UICSC team was formed in 2000 and competed in their first Clean Snowmobile Competition in 2001. The team's design that year coupled a BMW four-stroke engine with an Arctic Cat chassis. The design was good enough to win first in 2002 and again in 2003. For the 2004 competition the team decided to shift gears and move towards the development of a direct injected two-stroke engine. Consumers desire the power to weight ratio of two-stroke snowmobiles, but because of pressure to reduce noise and emmisions the snowmobile market has seen more and more four-stroke snowmobiles in recent years. In past years the snowmobile has had to many issues to seriously compete. In 2007, however, all the kinks were worked out and the University of Idaho team took first place overall at the Clean Snowmobile competition, winning first place in eight events. |
