CONSOLIDATED INVESTMENT TRUST (C.I.T.)

The C.I.T. utilizes a market-value-share method of operation (similar to a mutual fund).
  • Individual endowments pool their cash for investment purposes only.
  • Each endowment receives C.I.T. unit participation shares when it transfers cash to the C.I.T.
  • Gifts for endowments are subject to a 1% gift assessment levied by the UI Foundation.
  • The fair market value of a C.I.T. unit participation share is determined monthly.  At June 30, 2007, the value was $19.17.
  • During the period July 1, 1959 through June 30, 2007, the C.I.T. has grown from 25 individual endowments owning unit participation shares with a market value of $441,460 to 1,229 endowments owning shares with a market value exceeding $188.6 million.

Realized investment income (i.e., interest and dividends) and realized capital gains or losses from the sale of securities are accumulated until the end of each fiscal year and then are distributed in accordance with the terms of an endowment agreement that exists for each endowment.
  • The calculation of the C.I.T.'s realized income and capital gains/losses is made on a per share (C.I.T. unit participation share), pro-rata basis.
  • The amount of earnings distributed to the beneficiary scholarship or program supported by each endowment is determined by the language contained in the endowment agreement.  Earnings are distributed based on "restrictive" or "flexible" language--see: Distribution Policies.
  • Any earnings not distributed to the beneficiary scholarship or program are returned to the principal of each endowment and reinvested.
  • Since July 1, 1959, the C.I.T. has generated income exceeding $93.8 million and realized gains exceeding $77.9 million.
  • Since July 1, 1959, the C.I.T. has distributed over $91 million to the University of Idaho scholarships, programs and life income beneficiaries.

Independent public accountants (Eide Bailly) are retained to audit the C.I.T. and render an opinion regarding compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and the fairness of the financial statements presented to reflect the C.I.T.'s financial position each year. Copies of the annual audit report are available here or from the University of Idaho Trust & Investment Office.

Rogers Casey, an independent investment fund evaluation firm, is retained to compute and evaluate the C.I.T.'s investment performance.
