Sexual-Assault-Awareness Month

Men Can Stop Rape

Dr. Keith Edwards of Men Ending RapeWe at the Women’s Center and Dean of Students extend an invitation to you to attend a powerful presentation at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 4 by Dr. Keith Edwards in the SUB Ballroom here on campus. Dr. Edwards’ presentation is the highlight of a series of events we have developed for the month of April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The fact that men rape is obvious, but the fact that men can end rape is often an afterthought. That’s why Dr. Edwards formed Men Ending Rape, a group of men committed to ending rape by encouraging men to play a significant role in ending the perpetuation of a campus rape culture.

Keith recently founded and advised the Men Against Rape Society at the University of Delaware for which he was honored as a Vagina Warrior by the cast of the Vagina Monologues at UD in 2004 for his efforts "fighting for women's safety and choice." In 2005 Keith was honored with the Rebecca Williams Award for Commitment to Social Change at the University of Maryland - College Park. In 2006 Keith was honored by Equality Now for his courage working on the frontlines of the gender equity movement.

In a peer reviewed empirical study on newly hired resident assistants, Dr. Edwards’ presentation, “She Fears You: Men Ending Rape” showed evidence of lowering participants’ rape myth acceptance and increasing their understanding of what constitutes rape in both the immediate and long-term assessments.

Here’s what Christopher Elliott, Resident Director at Northern Arizona University, had to say about “She Fears You”: “I moved quickly through a range of emotion - including the most poignant anger, disbelief, frustration, and guilt - then landed in a place of conviction...Its message is both intellectually and emotionally powerful, the outcomes are realistically geared toward the individual and the group, and the passion is contagious. Not to be missed!"
