April 11th, 2014
Sponsored by GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, the National Day of Silence is a day of action in which students across the country take some form of a vow of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. Through their activities students can speak out against harassment and organize for change for their schools and communities. (From www.dayofsilence.org).
In conjunction with the Day of Silence, we are excited to announce that the LGBTQA Office will be participating in "Boxes and Walls" Awareness through Experience. Boxes and Walls personalizes oppression and the importance of activism by "bringing it home" for the individual. Participants are led by a tour guide through a series of "rooms". Each room is designed to focus on a historically oppressed group, culture, or social justice concern named by students. The event will take place during the following dates and times:
Thursday, April 10th 2:00-8:00pm
Friday, April 11th 4:00-8:00pm
Saturday, April 12th 4:00-8:00pm
