The James A. Barnes Memorial Award was created by the Associated Students of the University of Idaho (ASUI) to honor an outstanding UI staff member who displayed extraordinary enthusiasm and service to the students of the University of Idaho. Jim was the director of High School Relations (New Student Services) from 1975 to 1984. He died of cancer at the age of 36. Jim's incredible energy, sense of humor, and joy of living was an inspiration to many young people. He encouraged them to enroll at the University of Idaho and improve their lives through higher education. He gave tirelessly and joyfully of himself and is remembered by numerous alumni.
Faculty advisors have been a part of students' extracurricular activities since the 1890s when the administration encouraged the development of student organizations in order to discourage young men from frequenting local saloons. Today, organization advisors still play a vital role in the lives of students. They give of themselves and their time to enhance the co-curricular experiences of our students. In recognition of the work that student organization advisors do above and beyond their professional responsibilities, the ASUI has created the Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Award.
