Montana-based artist Gareth Curtiss, who was selected to create a bronze Joe Vandal Monument sculpture, visits the University of Idaho campus in Moscow, ID February 3-7, 2025. Over four days, Curtiss sculpted a clay model, called a maquette in sculpting terms, of what will become the full-scale bronze monument. He also presented a lecture and hosted an open house for campus and community members to attend. The Joe Vandal monument was commissioned to recognize the Associated Students of University of Idaho’s (ASUI) enduring legacy of support for the P1FCU Kibbie Dome and many other vital campus resources. It will be located near the dome and the ICCU Idaho Arena.

@madigilster is helping create sustainable gels that remove phosphorus from water for re-use in agriculture and industry. 👩‍🔬💧🦠🚜

Gilster, a junior studying chemical engineering, is learning to extract phosphorous from water to re-use it as part of a research project in the lab of Associate Professor James Moberly.

“I am really interested in sustainability, and this project looks for ways to potentially recycle environmental phosphorous,” she said.

The research focuses on creating a gelatinous material, called hydrogel, that is made of mostly water. The gel holds bacteria that absorb phosphorous and allows it to be extracted from water, either from wastewater treatment plants or natural systems like lakes, ponds and rivers.

“Once we create a gel that picks up phosphorous, it can be removed from the water and the phosphorous can be recycled,” Gilster said.

The trick is creating gels — and the phosphorous-grabbing microorganisms that live in them — that can withstand tough environmental conditions while also remaining environmentally friendly.

Gilster spent last summer experimenting with these biodegradable gelatinous materials that support these microorganisms while also being durable enough to remain intact under environmental conditions. Her work could result in sustainably harvesting and re-using the excess phosphorous from Idaho’s waterways and wastewater plants.

Alexis Biasotti does research in the Milk for Infant, Mind and Immunity (MIMI) Laboratory at the University of Idaho campus in Moscow, ID on March 26, 2025. She is an undergraduate pre-vet student, majoring in Animal and Veterinary Science, and has been in the Chen Lab since her freshman year because she was immediately drawn to the Piglet Intervention Center (PInC). Alexis has contributed significantly ranging from animal husbandry, lab maintenance, to growing cell culture for experiments. She completed one project comparing systemic inflammatory response between piglets fed human milk vs. infant formula. Alexis is now working on optimizing growing conditions for human enteroids.
