Wildlifers! Meeting Minutes for September 23, 2004

Hey Wildlifers!

We had our second meeting this evening and had a pretty good showing. After the meeting there were a group of people that stuck around and helped dust off and clean the mounts in the room, they look a lot better, so thanks a lot to them! In case you missed the meeting here is what we talked about...

~Report from National Wildlife Society Meeting in Calgary, Alberta~

-The national meeting was awesome!! Six of us attended, we went to symposium and listened to professionals present their research work to us and got to learn about a lot of awesome topics (which we have abstracts for on CD if you're interested in seeing them). We also participated in the Quiz Bowl and got second, beat the pants off Purdue, but got schooled by Humboldt, the returning champs. We also attended the student dinner and student/professional mixer and got to meet and mingle with the best of the best in wildlife research, management, and biology. It was a great experience, we had a lot of fun. If you're interested, keep it in mind for next fall when it will be held in Madison, Wisconsin.

~Soupfeed~

-On September 29th from 11-1 in the CNR foyer (main floor entry)

-This is an important fundraiser for the club that makes activities possible for us. Plus, if you're interested in getting involved with trips, and fun stuff, we do give first priority to those that help out with fundraisers, so keep that in mind. We are still looking for people to bring some stuff like soup, bread, drinks, or desert. If you can help out please email us and let us know what you can take.

~Waterfowl Checkstations~

-October 2nd and 3rd for Idaho Dept. of Fish and Game

-Spots are all filled up as of now, but if you're interested in being an alternate, let us know and we will call you if anyone cancels.

~Big Game Check Stations for Oregon Dept. of Fish and Game

-Locations and dates are: Hinds/ Burns area on October 2-4th, Lakeview area on October 2-4th, La Grande area on October 3-5th and also October 29-31st (29-31 is all filled though at this point.)

-We will be checking the harvested game from the hunters, tags, etc and taking samples to be tested for Chronic Wasting Disease, and others. We've never done this with Oregon before, so it's a good chance to get to meet employees over there and make connections. You will need to carpool, there are 3people per day, so that should be easy to figure out. And they are providing your hotel stay and food for the weekend, that's a good deal. If you're interested, email us with what date and location as well as your contact info and name.

~Highway Cleanup and Trapshoot~

-Meet on October 3rd at 1:00 pm in the gravel parking lot by the steam plant

-We will be cleaning up our stretch of road by Deary, which shouldn't take long, and then heading out to the Genessee gravel pit to shoot trap. If you have a shot gun, bring it. We will have 2 throwers, clays, and some shells for 20 and 12 guage. If you're wanting to shoot a lot of clays though, be sure to bring some shells and clays with you too, we're limited on how many per person. Once again, contact us if you didn't already sign up and if you have questions.

~Member Survey Results~

-We went over what y'all had to say on the surveys and some major points were: bird watching field trips, a career day, research techniques clinic, and more. We'll be bringing these up throughout the year. Let us know whenever any other ideas come up. And thank you all for your input, there were some great ideas.

OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS.....

~Wilderness Celebration~

-PCPI is hosting a Wilderness Celebration and wanted us to invite our members. It will be held in East City Park on October 9th at 1:00. There will be lectures and displays on wilderness, conservation, etc.

~Bi-Weekly Quiz Bowl Practice~

-We discussed the idea of doing a casual, maybe 1 hr quiz bowl practice every other week in early preparation for Conclave this Spring. Plus, it's just a good time, so if you're interested, you don't need to be a genius to attend, just come practice, hang out, have a good time. If this is something you're interested in, let us know and we'll get it started.

~Amphibian Surveys/ Observation~

-Javan Bauder has done amphibian surveys with grad students in the area before and is looking for people that are interested in going out to local places like El Dorado Creek to look for amphibians. When it comes to herps, Javan is the guy. It's an opportunity to learn a lot and get some surveying practice. If you're interested, email Javan at baud4576@uidaho.edu or listen up at the next meeting.

~Contact List~

-Obviously if you're getting this, you're on it. If you know of anybody who is not receiving emails though and wants to be on the list, let me know.

~Dues~

-Dues are $6/semester or $10/year. You can pay them at any meeting and that makes you an official member in the club to attend activities, etc.

~SNAG~

-Suzi Harrington announced that the SNAG, the CNR paper, needs writers bad. If you're interested in being a regular writer for the SNAG, or if you have one story you'de like to have in there, or just questions, contact her at harr3646@uidaho.edu.

~TWS Committees~

-We are trying to set up committees to get TWS more organized and enable us to do more as a club. We have a community service, public relations/ historian, fundraising, and education committee. They're not a huge time committment, just helping with organizing some activities. It's a good way to put in your ideas and help get stuff accomplished. If you have any questions about this, contact either Mackenzie or I.

Well, that's it for the meeting. The next meeting will be on October 7th at 6:00 in CNR Rm. 108 like usual. We'll be discussing Big Game check stations with IDFG at that time as well, in addition to more. If you have any questions you can reply to me at this address on this email or email Mackenzie at shar3840@uidaho.edu. Good luck with exams and bird hunting, see you on the 7th!
