Wildlifers! Meeting Minutes for January 20, 2005

Hey All~

Hope your semester is off to a good start and you all had an awesome winter break. We had our first meeting of the semester tonight and covered a lot of topics. Here's what we discussed...

GUEST SPEAKER: Pete Zager, Principal Wildlife Research Biologist for Idaho Dept. of Fish and Game. Pete gave a presentation of the new Ungulate Ecology Project and discussed the focus and details of the project. He also went over the internships on the project that were sent out in an email announcement from Karla Makus. He also discussed the other projects that he is involved in such as projects dealing with elk, mountain quail, possibly mountain goats, etc. If you have any questions about the internships or anything he covered email either me (Karen, at fowl7362@uidaho.edu) or Mackenzie at shar3840@uidaho.edu and we'll try to help or get you in contact with Pete. TURKEY TRAPPING VOLUNTEERING WITH IDFG:

We have the opportunity to volunteer once again with IDFG trapping, taking blood samples, banding, processing, and releasing "trouble turkeys" in the area. It would be at random times, early mornings throughout the next couple months as volunteers are needed. If you are interested in being on the contact list for IDFG to call when they need help please email Mackenzie at shar3840@uidaho.edu and let her know.

CAREER FAIR:

The annual CNR career fair will be Wednesday February 9th at UI and February 10th at WSU. We are going to have numerous employers there looking to recruit employees and answer questions. TWS gets paid to help with the set up of the career fair and as you all know, we are in desperate need of funds for club activities. We only had a couple people sign up at the meeting and we really need some more people to help! Here are the times we need help: *9:00-10:00 to help employers set up in the SUB ballroom- 3 people!! *3:00 to help employers take down displays and clean-up- 7 people still needed!!! This one is very important too because clean-up is our responsibility! Once again, this is money for our club so we can do things, so if you don't have class and can help, please email Sam Cisney at cisn2449@uidaho.edu and let her know. Thanks guys!

SOUP FEED on Wednesday February 9th (same day as Career Fair):

We still need people to help by bringing soup, bread, dessert, drinks, and especially with working the table and selling soup. Email Mackenzie if you can help or bring something.

IGLOO BUILDING TRIP w/ University of Montana on Saturday February 12th:

We are doing our annual trip for fun to build igloos and hang out with the people from the University of Montana Wildlife Society at Lolo Pass. We will be leaving Saturday morning and coming back Sunday. We're providing dinner, but we need to figure out who can drive and who can bring equipment for building igloos/ camp equipment. If you can bring something, drive, or if you want to go and aren't on the list, email Mackenzie. We'll discuss the details and finalize at the next meeting.

T-SHIRTS:

Becca Mowry made up an awesome t-shirt design that we have approved and are going to put onto t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, etc. We are looking into prices, etc but at the next meeting we will probably have an order form for you to pre-order a shirt so you get the size you want, etc. If you have any suggestions/ requests, let one of us know. We're also looking into a UI Fish and Wildlife hat to sell for a club fundraiser, we'll get more details, but if you have comments speak up, we'de love the input.

TREASURY REPORT:

As of now we have $1924 in our account. However, Conclave in the Spring is going to take no money so all money can be used for Turnbull, Igloo Building, and other trips.

SNOWFEST Saturday, January 29th:

Snowfest will be this Saturday at Ron Mahoney's house and is open to everyone in the CNR. There will be a potluck dinner at 5:00, sledding, snow sports, a campfire, and time to talk with students and faculty. They will be taking CNR vehicles, leaving from the gravel lot at 12:30.

CONCLAVE:

Spring Conclave is coming up in March. We're busy getting things organized and practicing for quiz bowl. We're also trying to get things worked out and all 19 people on the list can go and more if desired. We're getting started on some major fundraising just for Conclave, so if you want to go to Conclave, you can be involved. We will have more info the next time the Conclave group meets on January 24, 2005.

OTHER UPCOMING SPRING ACTIVITIES:

~The Research Techniques Clinic: now set for Saturday April 16th will be an all-day clinic in which faculty, professionals, grad students, etc will lead sessions on numerous topics relating to research skills you will use in the work force. We are busy rounding up presenters now, so if you have any suggestions or would like to help with the organizing let myself, Mackenzie, or any other officer know.

~Turnbull to check wood duck boxes

~Garden Creek Nature Conservancy Trip

~Application for Student Chapter of the Year for National TWS. If you are interested in becoming a member of the national organization TWS (our parent organization) let one of us officers know and we can get you the information. It gets you discounts for national meeting registration, the wildlife bulletins and newsletters, etc.

That's all for the minutes, thanks for your attention. And thanks to all who came to the meeting. Hope to see you at the next one on Thursday, February 10th. We'll have more details on upcoming projects and t-shirts to order!

Have a great weekend! ~TWS
