Pi Beta Phi Academics

Pi Beta Phi strives for academic excellence and we pride ourselves in getting high grades. During the fall semester we achieved a grade point average of 3.25, which placed us 4th out of the 9 sororities on campus.

Study Table Program

Within our house we encourage people to study in groups so that study habits and knowledge can be passed between our members and pledges. Every Tuesday night we have study groups in the formal living room and dining room for 2 hours and anyone is welcome to attend. These study groups encourage group study rather than individual study.

As far as individual study there is a study table program. All pledges start off with 8 hours to complete each week. All members' study table hours are based on GPA, the higher the GPA the less number of study table hours. Anybody member with a 3.30 GPA or above is not required to participate in study table, although they are encouraged to help others when asked. There is monitored study sessions available throughout the week so everybody on study table is able to complete their study hours whenever it fits into their schedule. Study table hours for all members and pledges are re-evaluated at midterms and semester. Hours cannot be increased, but decreased if the person has a higher GPA than what they are currently doing study table for.

We offer many incentives to people for studying. For the members who achieve a GPA of a 4.0 at semester they are given 'smarty pants,' which are sweat pants that have embroidery of 'smarty pants' on them. We also have a no skip box that members and pledges put their name in if they do not skip class for a whole week. Names are drawn weekly and candy is given out to those people whose names are drawn. There is a Brag Board in the hall, where people submit any A's and then they get stickers next to their name for each A. At the end of the semester the person with the most stickers gets a $40 gift certificate to the Palouse Mall. We also have a 'study buddy' blanket that is passed on each week to the person who has been studying the most or helping others out a lot. The person who receives the blanket gets to sign it with a permanent marker and keep it for the week.

In order to help people study our house has a study room which is 24 hour quiet. It is equipped with Ikea personal computer desks for anybody who chooses to keep their computers in that room. There are multiple Ethernet plug-ins for everybody to use. We also have Ikea project desks in the room for people to complete projects on. In the study room there are professor files, test files, and old text books. The professor files are cards which tell us about a professors teaching style, how they grade, if we liked them, etc. to help us choose which professor to register for when picking our classes. The test files are all of the old tests that we have taken. There are hundreds of tests that we have compiled for people to study from when they have upcoming tests in the same class that somebody else has already taken. The old text books are generally not used in classes anymore but work great for clarification if the current textbook a student is using now is not clear.

Scholarships

Pi Beta Phi offers the Margaret Kinyon Scholarship once yearly. This award is for $1600 which is split among 3 members in the house. The award is based on the person from each pledge class with the highest cumulative GPA. Members that recieve the award this year are Katie Guho, Senior class; Holly Axelson, Junior class; and Morgan Sims, sophomore class.

All other scholarships that come up within the university are posted in the house and members are encouraged to apply for them throughout the year.
