LITERARY CONTEST

Golden Key is pleased to announce the Society's annual literary contest. The purpose of the contest is to recognize and encourage our members' literary achievements. All students and alumni members are invited to enter.

There are three categories: fiction, nonfiction and poetry. The entries are judged according to originality, creativity and clarity. The winners are selected by a panel of judges including academic coordinators, chapter advisors and honorary members.

Rules

Only Golden Key student members or alumni may submit entries. The university, year of induction, summer address and telephone number must be included with each entry so that verification of membership can be made.

The entry must be an essay, think piece or original composition, fiction, nonfiction or poetry. Please specify the category, fiction, nonfiction or poetry, on the title page.

Only one composition per student will be accepted.

An entry must not exceed 1000 words.

Previously published works are not acceptable.

DEADLINE FOR ENTRY EACH YEAR IS APRIL 1.

The winner in each category will receive a $1000 cash award and their entry will be printed in the annual edition of CONCEPTS. The first runner-up in each category will receive $500 and their name will be posted in CONCEPTS.

STUDENT SCHOLASTIC SHOWCASE

Student Scholastic Showcase is one of Golden Key' s national academic programs, and a highlight at the national convention. The Showcase is comprised of selected members who present a paper on their research or some other scholarly work. Three papers are selected by Golden Key' s national council for presentation at the convention.

The Student Scholastic Showcase was instituted as a national academic program to highlight the scholarly works of members across a broad spectrum of undergraduate studies. In the past, students have presented work on a variety of topics including the psychology of dreams, music theory, genetics and embryology, displaying the wide variety of interest among of members.

Guidelines

Members may submit a typewritten abstract which describes their entry to the national headquarters by April 25. (Preferences will be given to research which has been presented previously at an off-campus academic meeting.)

A letter of faculty support must be included with each entry.

Participants in the Showcase must be registered at the convention. (Applicants are encouraged to seek sponsorship for registration and travel expenses from an academic department of their universities. )

Each presenter will earn a $1000 scholarship and gain valuable experience by this presentation. Each student will be allowed 15 minutes to discuss their research and an additional five minutes to respond to questions from the floor.

Applications will be available with the national convention registration material in March, or for more information, you may call national headquarters at (800) 377-2401. Winners will be announced by the national council in mid-May.





REGIONAL STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE

During the 1990 National Convention the chapter delegates approved a proposal to create the position of regional student representative (RSR) to be recognized in the national constitution.

The nomination and election of the RSR takes place at the regional conference. It is an honor to be RSR, and the position offers the opportunity for a Golden Key member to become involved at the regional level.

Qualifications for RSR

The RSR must be present at the regional conference at which he/she is elected.

The RSR must be enrolled throughout the term of office at an institution in the region which has a Golden Key chapter.

The RSR must serve a one year term (regional conference to regional conference)

No student shall serve as RSR and National Student Representative concurrently.

Nomination and Election Process

The outgoing RSR shall supervise the nomination and election process determining the incoming RSR.

Nominations will take place during the Saturday luncheon and during the closing session of the regional conference. The election will take place during the closing session.

The nominees are expected to give a short presentation at the election.

Voting will be done by secret ballot and each chapter present will have two votes.

The nominee who receives the most votes will be the RSR.

Duties and Responsibilities of each RSR

Attendance at two regional conferences (conference selected and conference one year later).

Attendance at national convention, the second weekend in August.

Report to national student representative (NSR) on regional student concerns and issues.

Participate in the selection of the national student representative at the national convention.

Conduct and supervise election of incoming regional student representative at the regional conference.

Suggested Duties (not required)

Work in conjunction with the regional director in order to improve communication within the region.

Attend area chartering receptions representing Golden Key on a regional level when asked by regional director.

Correspond with chapters in the region to provide support and advice.





NATIONAL STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE

During the 1982 National Convention, the chapter delegates unanimously approved a proposal by the Michigan State University chapter to establish a fourth position on the national council. This position, entitled the national student representative (NSR), was established to provide direct student input into the decisions of the national council.

Objectives in Selecting a National Student Representative

To recognize an outstanding undergraduate member of Golden Key National Honor Society.

To provide undergraduate member leadership at the national council level of the Society.

To allow an individual channel for undergraduate members' viewpoints, advice and recommendations to be heard by the national council regarding issues concerning the undergraduate members.

Powers and Duties of the National Student Representative

To attend and participate as a voting member in all meetings of the national council for a one year term, beginning with the representative's selection in August.

To solicit the views of undergraduate members in all discussions of the national council.

The selection process of the national student representative is outlined in the following pages. Nominations must be received by the national secretary no later than April 30.

Selection Criteria for an Undergraduate Member

To be an eligible candidate, the individual must have been an undergraduate member of Golden Key National Honor Society for at least six months prior to his/her selection by the regional student representatives at the national convention in August.

To be an eligible candidate, the individual must be enrolled as an undergraduate, a graduate or graduate professional student at a college or university that has an active Golden Key chapter during his/her term of office.

Selection Procedures

Each chapter may nominate one outstanding member for consideration, by submitting a nominating brochure, as described below, to the national secretary on or before the last day in April of the year he/she is to be nominated.

A nominating brochure shall consist of not more than nine pages of standard typing paper, bound in a lightweight, flexible cardboard binder.

The following information shall be typewritten in the upper center of the front cover:

  • (first line) candidate's name
  • (second line) year of nomination
  • (third line) name of chapter
  • No other wording or decoration shall appear on the cover.

    The inside pages of the brochure shall be typewritten on one side of each page only, and only in the following order:

  • page 1, a one page essay stating the candidate's goals and objectives as national student representative
  • page 2, a certified transcript of grades, including the most recently completed semester or quarter, prior to nomination
  • page 3, begin not more than two pages describing the nominee's activities in Golden Key
  • page 5, begin not more than two pages devoted to listing college employment and extracurricular activities, offices and honors, with explanatory matter where necessary
  • page 7, letter of recommendation from the chapter advisor (in the event that the chapter advisor is a current member of the national council, a letter from an honorary member or other individual approved by the chapter advisor shall be substituted)
  • page 8 and 9, not more than two letters of recommendation from responsible people knowing the candidate (professors, employers, etc.).

    Note:In the event that there are less than four pages devoted to Golden Key and campus activities beginning on page 3, the ensuing page numbers shall be advanced accordingly; however, no additional material or letters of recommendation shall be permitted.

    Variation from the above physical description, content and order shall be deemed sufficient grounds for disqualification from consideration for the position of national student representative.

    The national council will review each nominating brochure and select in May the three outstanding candidates who will be interviewed at the national convention held each August. The three finalists should be registered by their respective chapters as convention delegates. The selection of these three candidates will be based on the following four criteria:
    a. Outstanding service to Golden Key
    b. Good character
    c. Scholarship
    d. Student (campus) activities

    At the national convention, each finalist will be interviewed by the national student representative and regional student representatives. This group, through the national student representative, will select the new national student representative for the upcoming year. In addition, each national student representative's name, chapter and year of office will be inscribed on a pennanent award plaque at the Golden Key National Honor Society Headquarters.

    In the event that the national student representative is unable to fulfill his/her obligations, the first runner-up shall be named as successor.
