Coeur d'Alene

Science on Tap | Wednesday, September 4 | Fort Ground Grill
“Recycling Used Nuclear Fuel: Can Nuclear Energy be a Renewable Resource?" with Terry Todd from the Idaho National Laboratory. Renewable energy is an important topic so we are shifting our schedule a bit in September so we can discuss recycling of used nuclear fuel with Dr. Terry Todd from the Idaho National Laboratory while he is in Coeur d'Alene. The United States does not currently recycle used nuclear fuel. After its use once in the reactor, it is removed for storage and ultimate disposal in a repository. Dr. Terry Todd will talk about the challenges and opportunities in taking advantage of the energy still remaining in used nuclear fuel. Dr. Todd holds BS and MS degrees in Chemical Engineering from Montana State University and a Ph.D. in Radiochemical Engineering from St. Petersburg, Russia, with 30 years of experience in the field of chemical separations involving used nuclear fuel and radioactive waste. He is currently a Laboratory Fellow and Director of the Fuel Cycle Science and Technology Division, at the Idaho National Laboratory. He has been awarded 23 U.S. patents and 6 Russian patents.
