Pea aphids

There were a few pea aphids caught on the southern end of the state, but numbers were very low.
Green Peach Aphids
The only other news worthy event is that we have found green peach aphids colonizing north of Aberdeen in a commercial field. We are hoping that this is an isolated incident but we cannot be sure. They have also been found in Parma in the fields and in Kimberly in water pan traps. This seems to be a month early in the Aberdeen area. Farmers may want to start their leaf turning surveys and do so every 3-4 days. This is the University of Idaho's new recommendations.

PLRV/GPA CONTROL RECOMMENDATIONS

1. PLANT CLEAN, CERTIFIED SEED. REMOVE ALL VOLUNTEER POTATOES.
-EVEN AT 0.05% THERE ARE 871 INFECTED PLANTS PER 120    ACRE PIVOT.
2. USE A SYSTEMIC INSECTICIDE AT PLANTING OR,  PLANT  VIRUS RESISTANT GENETICALLY MODIFIED CULTIVARS.
-IF THERE IS A MARKET FOR THEM
3. DO NOT SPRAY TO CONTROL WINGED APHIDS
4. SAMPLE FOR APHIDS EVERY 3-4 DAYS
5. MAINTAIN A "NO GAP" PROGRAM OF CONTROL
6. SPRAY LATE SEASON SUSCEPTIBLE VARIETIES AT DETECTION OF SURVIVING WINGLESS APHIDS.
7. CONTROL APHIDS ON LATE SEASON SUSCEPTIBLE VARIETIES UNTIL VINE KILL.
8. DO NOT EXTEND GROWING SEASON PAST NORMAL VINE KILL IF POSSIBLE.
9. CONSIDER CONTROLLING APHIDS IN EARLY HARVEST FIELDS TO PREVENT MIGRATION TO LONG SEASON, SUSCEPTIBLE VARIETIES.
