First Aphid Flyer of 1999

Welcome to the first Newsletters of the year. We will follow a similar format as previous years. We will have the newsletter on the first page followed by the aphid count data on page two. If anyone has anything to contribute, or any suggestions on what you would like to see, please contact us at email; mowiebe@uidaho.edu or mail us a hard copy at the Aberdeen R&E Center, PO Box AA, Aberdeen, Idaho 83210.

Aphids

The weather has given us a very slow start this year. As long as this cool and rainy weather persists aphid flight activity will be very low. We have been catching quite a few Russian olive (thistle) aphids (Capitophorous elaeagni). In the field trials of Dr. Susan Halbert and Dr. Larry Sandvol this aphid was implicated as potentially a major contributor to virus Y of potatoes.

First Aphid Pest Problem

The first aphid problem that has come to our attention this year is Dysaphis foeniculus (no common name) on carrots in the Treasure Valley. This is a non-virus spreading aphid and is not a known vector of carrot mottly dwarf virus

Winter Wheat

The winter wheat crop in Southern Idaho, with some notable exceptions, looks good to excellent. There appears to have been only minimal virus spread. However, some fields we are aware of near Rockland did suffer extensive virus spread. Presently we are waiting for test results to determine the virus type.
