Spring Survey News
On March 27& 28, 2000 we started surveying the southern part of the state for cereal aphids. In Parma we surveyed every winter wheat field we could find. Few that they were, we did not find Russian wheat aphids. In the Hagerman Blue Gulch area we found no aphids but we did observe what looked like BYDV (Barley yellow dwarf virus) in several fields. Around Castelford we surveyed 5 different fields, 2 of which had Russian Wheat aphid colonizing, and doing very well. On towards Burley on Hwy 30 we found several fields with what looked like virus but found no aphids.
April 3, 2000 we surveyed the Lake channel, Pleasant Valley, and Aberdeen area. We surveyed 15 different fields and found no aphids. In 3 of the fields we found what looked like BYDV. As the wheat matures we will know more about the virus problems.
April 4, 2000 we started in Arbon Valley. Most of the fields in this area had some yellowing on the plants (BYDV). However, only 1 had Russian wheat aphids. Several had old damage from RWA, but had no live aphids. We then went to Hyw 91 and proceeded to Downy and Preston. East of Downy we found live Russian wheat aphids and more severe damage in the fields we checked. We also found RWA and Bird cherry oat aphid north of the Grace area. Damage was light so far. As for the area between Pocatello and American Falls we found old RWA damage and only 1 field had live aphids.
We will continue our survey in the Rexburg and Idaho Falls area within the next 2 weeks.
