SYLLABUS

Aug 26 Lecture - Course introduction, outline, grading etc. What is silviculture and what are the recent trends in forest regeneration? Distribute seedlings.

Assignment:
1. Prepare questions on cone/seed crops for next class.
2. Look up assigned seed characteristics for next class.

Sep 02 Lecture - Cone phenology and seed characteristics.

Lab trip to forest - Examine trees to forecast and rate cone crops; Evaluate clearcut, seed tree, and shelterwood stands.

Sep 09 Lecture - Cone collection & seed extraction.

Lab trip to nursery - Seed quality tests; Provide cones and seed for testing; Identification of seed and one year-old seedlings.
