Mass Spectrometry Core Lab

Mass spectrometric analysis has many attributes that make it an ideal method for analysis of biological and organic chemicals. It has high sensitivity, high specificity, and the ability to generate spectra useful for the identification of unknown analytes and quantify known analytes.

The UI Mass Spectrometry core facility is equipped with mass spectrometers with complimentary capabilities for the analysis of various volatile and non-volatile organic compounds and biochemicals.  The mass spectrometers in the core are all interfaced to either a gas or liquid chromatograph to accomplish separation of analytes prior to MS analysis, if desired. These instruments are useful for identifying differentially expressed metabolites, determining the accurate mass of an analyte, or identifying proteins, in addition to many other analyses. The Core is also operated by experienced staff and equipped with comprehensive sample preparation resources.

See the capabilities and possible analyses that can be done using the instruments in the core.

Contact the Core director (mass-spec-core@uidaho.edu or 208-885-5893) if you are interested in discussing the feasibility of applying mass spectrometry in your research.
