The Science of Chemicals

Explore the properties of chemicals and other substances, how they interact, the changes they undergo, and the natural laws that cause those changes and apply your knowledge in a career in education, medicine, private industry and forensic science.

Fast Facts

  • About 95,000 chemists work in the chemical industry in the U.S.
  • In Chem 491 (Undergraduate Research), students are individually mentored by the professor. They partake in real research work and may have the opportunity to present their results at scientific conferences or get their name on a journal article.
  • All our B.S. degree options give access to graduate school.
  • For especially talented graduates the National Laboratories (e.g. INL, PNNL) are a great place to work.
Career There are careers for chemists in:
  • analytical laboratories
  • food industry
  • mining industry
  • oil industry
  • manufacturing
  • pharmaceutical industry
