Dean's Message

Thanks for visiting the College of Science Web site and welcome! Since taking the helm as dean of the college last spring, I’m thrilled with the momentum we’ve created as we continue to build on our strengths and drive toward an even brighter future. Our mission includes conducting groundbreaking research and providing excellent education in science to all University of Idaho students as well as teachers and adult learners across the state of Idaho.

As a University of Idaho science student, you benefit from the connections we’ve built with local and regional agencies and labs, such as the Idaho National Laboratory and the Idaho Geological Survey. For example, in partnership with the Washington State Crime Laboratory Division, Ray von Wandruszka, professor of chemistry and department chair, and other faculty members are supporting a new ground-breaking forensics degree in chemistry at the university. You’ll also benefit from our close association with nearby Washington State University. By pooling resources and engaging in these strategic partnerships, we believe you’ll have the unique opportunity to build professional connections, benefit from access to a wide range of research facilities, and participate fully in the collaborative spirit of science.

From a research perspective, the College of Science is also ripe with activity. In fact, through collaboration between the University of Idaho, Boise State University and Idaho State University, our college is an integral part of a five-year, $15 million grant from the National Science Foundation. This project will support critical research into impacts of climate change along the Snake River and Salmon River watersheds. When it comes to health-related research, our accomplishments are gaining international attention. For instance, Larry J. Forney, Ph.D. and Professor in our Department of Biological Sciences, is leading a critical research effort focused on evolution and computational biology.  Funded by a grant from the NIH, his research is engaging scientists from multiple departments within the College of Science, including: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics and Physics.

In addition to our stellar faculty, proven curriculum and hands-on, research-based approach to teaching and learning, our college is also a leader in the development of innovative strategies for delivering math and science education to all University of Idaho students. We also focus on math and science education initiatives that benefit primary and secondary schoolteachers across the state.

Please spend some time getting to know us further by exploring our college site, departmental and faculty Web sites, and meeting the College of Science staff. Also, keep an eye on the College of Science news section for important updates and happenings throughout the college.

I look forward to getting to know many of you as we continue to uncover our potential and work together to define what’s next for the College of Science!
