Waste Management - Waste management involves the accumulation, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste at the University of Idaho. EHS can help ensure that waste management practices in all work areas or groups are conducted safely, and in compliance with federal and state rules and regulations.
Waste Minimization - Waste minimization involves reducing the quantity and/or the toxicity of hazardous waste generated. Please feel free to call EHS for help in waste minimization.
Hazardous Materials Management - EHS can provide assistance in the proper management of hazardous materials, including proper storage and handling requirements, which will help ensure a safe working environment and compliance with any pertinent regulations.
Storage - Hazardous materials (including hazardous waste) must be stored according to the Uniform Fire Code, Idaho Division of Building Safety, and Environmental Protection Agency rules and regulations.

Waste Collection Status
To check on the status of waste that has been submitted to EHS for disposal, call 885-6524.
EHS often receives chemicals for disposal that are still in good condition, many of which have been submitted for disposal have never been opened. These chemicals are surplused to the university community at no charge or risk. To check on availability or obtain a chemical, call EHS at 885-6524. Chemicals that are requested will be delivered at the earliest convenience. If the material does not meet certain needs or expectations, simply call EHS and EHS will collect it. This service is provided free of charge. If EHS knows in advance which chemicals are of interest to certain groups or employees, EHS will automatically deliver the materials when they become available. Future plans also include providing a current inventory of chemicals to hazardous materials users on this web page.
Transporting Hazardous Materials
There are state and federal regulations that govern the transportation and shipping of hazardous materials. Following the instructions below will enable EHS to collect and ship materials according to the regulations. Except for the supplies and/or shipping costs that are accrued, this service is provided at no charge.
University employees and students who desire to ship or transport hazardous materials must inform EHS of their intent at least three (3) days prior the intended shipment date. EHS personnel will help ensure that all state and federal regulations for the transportation of all materials have been met.
Specific information is required in order to determine the necessary paper work, packaging, labeling and markings of hazardous materials or dangerous goods before they can be legally transported. The following information must be submitted in writing to EHS (allow for ample time) in order to ship or transport hazardous materials in commerce:
(1) Materials List - A detailed list of all material(s) being shipped or transported.
(2) Quantity - The quantity of each material.
