New Faculty Resources
Welcome New Faculty Members
From President Duane Nellis and Provost and Executive Vice President Doug Baker
You are joining our academic team, and the Vandal family in Moscow and around the state, at an exciting time in our University's history.
It is a proud history: more than a century of service as a land grant research university and the state's flagship higher education institution. This year, you become a part of that history - part of our "Legacy of Leading." The University of Idaho has earned distinction for quality academics; an exceptional student life experience; leading-edge research; outreach to build strong communities, industries and public policy; and remarkable alumni achievement. You will help grow and enhance our worldwide influence, and shape the next century of higher education practice and impact.
You are becoming part of a select and tightly-bonded intellectual community that is dedicated to teaching and learning, scholarly and creative activity and statewide outreach and engagement. All of which leads to outcomes with relevance to real local issues, and impacts with real global reach. Those impacts - lead the state of Idaho and the region, and are measured nationally against other top-tier institutions.
The University attracts the top students from Idaho and beyond, including, by far, the most National Merit Scholars in the state. (In fact, we're expecting to nearly double their numbers this fall.) We welcome undergraduate students who are accepted at top institutions, but who choose Idaho for the unique combination of academic and lifestyle qualities we offer. We welcome graduate and professional students who select our programs for their academic rigor and research opportunities.
The students who will learn from you consistently earn national honors, including Goldwater and Udall scholarships. Their achievements, especially in joint faculty-student research projects, are astonishing in their depth and breadth. In your graduate programs, you'll see the talent and dedication that enables the University of Idaho to produce about 100 Ph.D.s and 600 master's students annually.
Outside the classroom, you will be impressed by your students' involvement in the world around them. Last year, we received a national award recognizing our more than 2,200 students who volunteered for community service in Moscow and Boise, in New Orleans, Peru and beyond. You might want to join them: civic engagement is a hallmark of the University's students and faculty.
You'll find that we dive into the new year quickly here at the University of Idaho. But as you settle in, don't forget to take time to walk through the Arboretum; take in an exhibit at the Prichard Gallery downtown; cheer on Vandal athletic teams at the Kibbie Dome, Memorial Gym and Wicks Field; enjoy a concert in the Lionel Hampton School of Music Recital Hall; or stroll around the historic and peaceful, Olmsted Brothers-designed campus landscape.
Best wishes for a year filled with productivity and rewards. And thank you for joining us! Together, we will make Idaho a "great state of the world."
