Q&A with Marie Duncan

The best thing about the University of Idaho:
The best thing about the University of Idaho is the sense of family here on campus. The faculty and staff from the top down are all here to help and make the students feel comfortable in their new home. It is why I wanted to work for Idaho post-graduation—so I could have a hand in making future students succeed here and find a second home in Moscow.

Why did YOU choose the University of Idaho?
My parents brought me onto the University of Idaho’s campus a lot as I grew up. They both graduated from Idaho and were proud alumni, so I always knew in the back of my mind that I would come here. It was a great fit, because I wanted a traditional college experience and a campus large enough that there were people to meet. I visited with friends, who went to larger schools outside the state, and they had no connections on campus—I knew I didn’t want that. I found exactly what I wanted at Idaho, and I am thankful every day that I chose to become a Vandal.

Favorite campus activities:
I love all the traditions on this campus. Homecoming week is my favorite time of the year on campus. Students are taking part in traditions, and living groups are competing in fun activities like skits and house decorations. Alumni return home to share stories with current students and to reunite with friends from their college days. The school spirit that week is hard to match the rest of the year!

Favorite local activity:
The Moscow Farmers Market is my favorite local activity. It is a great spot to grab breakfast on a Saturday morning and some local produce for the rest of the week.

Advice for your students:
Take the time to do a college visit. While on that college visit, talk to the current students, walk around campus on your own and try to meet with as many people as possible. Ask yourself if you like the size of the campus, the layout, and the buildings. Also see if you like the people. Watch how the students interact with each other; I think the way students treat each other says a lot about a campus atmosphere.
