MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho will honor veterans of military service and current active duty military personnel with a Military Appreciation Day on Saturday, Nov. 1. A number of special events are scheduled for veterans and military personnel and their families, highlighted by the Idaho Vandals versus San Jose State University football game.
“This is the fourth year the University of Idaho has hosted Military Appreciation Day and we look forward to honoring our veterans and military servicemen and servicewomen, and thanking them for their dedication to our country and the sacrifices they’ve made in our behalf,” said Heidi Linehan, chair of the Military Appreciation Day planning committee.
Participants are invited to a pre-game social at “Camp Vandal” on the north lawn of the ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center beginning at 11 a.m. Students from the University’s Department of History will meet with veterans to conduct oral histories.
The football game begins at 2 p.m. Prior to kickoff, participants will join the color guard to march on the colors, and members of the University’s ROTC programs will rappel from the ceiling of the Kibbie Dome to deliver the coin to the referees for the game’s coin flip by a selected Vandal veteran.
Halftime activities include an induction ceremony of new recruits into military service.
Veterans and current military personnel can purchase tickets to the game for themselves and their families for a reduced price of $13 per person.
If you plan to attend Military Appreciation Day at the University of Idaho, please RSVP to Linehan at (208) 885-5304 or hlinehan@uidaho.edu. People with special needs also can contact Linehan.
Servicemen, servicewomen and veterans who are University of Idaho alumni can begin their visit to campus on Friday, Oct. 31. An Alumni Touchdown reception takes place from 6 - 8 p.m. in the Alumni Office Lounge.
The University of Idaho Operation Education Scholarship Program is helping to coordinate Military Appreciation Day. Operation Education is a pioneering program designed to help veterans severely and permanently disabled as a result of service since Sept. 11, 2001. The spouses of disabled veterans also are eligible for the scholarship. It is the first such program in the nation. The University provides financial support and resources – such as tuition, fees and books, on-campus housing, transportation, medical assistance, child care, adaptive equipment, tutoring and mentorship – at its main campus in Moscow to assist veterans and their families as they re-enter civilian life.
