COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – The University of Idaho is expanding academic program offerings at the Coeur d’Alene center for fall semester. New offerings include a bachelor’s degree program in English, introductory coursework in virtual technology and design (VTD), and upper division coursework in chemistry.

“Educational opportunity is critical for prosperity in our region,” said Charles Buck, associate vice president and center executive officer for northern Idaho-Coeur d’Alene. “At the northern Idaho center we are taking advantage of technology to access our world-class faculty and provide a more comprehensive list of programs that serve individuals who cannot relocate to Moscow."

The bachelor’s degree program in English will feature a literature emphasis delivered through a combination of in-person, internet and compressed video courses at the University of Idaho, Coeur d’Alene center. With the addition of the English program UI Coeur d’Alene will offer a total of 11 bachelors programs and 11 master degree programs.

“English literature is a course of study that prepares students for a whole spectrum of jobs,” said Gary Williams, UI English department chair. “Think of careers in which you will need to exercise critical judgment. Will you need to use language expertly? Will you need to analyze materials and bring research to bear on questions? Studying literature is excellent training in all these skills.”.

UI Coeur d’Alene will also offer introductory virtual technology and design and upper division chemistry coursework starting fall semester. VTD is an industry-driven program that merges technology with the science of art and design.

“VTD is an important component of the University of Idaho, Coeur d’Alene’s digital innovation program, Dign’IT, that promotes awareness and practical training for high-tech industries,” Buck said.

The VTD coursework will focus on 3-D modeling used to create assets for digital sets or dynamic virtual experiences for entertainment, education, health care, and many other emerging areas of interactive or linear visualizations.

The chemistry coursework will focus on upper division physical chemistry which explores kinetic theory, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and spectroscopy.

UI fall semester begins Aug. 26 at the Coeur d’Alene center. For more information on these new programs, go to www.uidaho.edu/cda.
