MOSCOW, Idaho – The following is a list of University of Idaho sponsored events for the week of Aug. 16-22. Events will take place in Moscow and Boise, and are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Monday, Aug. 16
Fall 2010 WWAMI medical education classes begin.

Dissertation Defense: Charles Berenbrock

The presentation also will be available via video on the University of Idaho Moscow campus in the Janssen Engineering Building, room 111.
Doctoral candidate in civil engineering Charles Berenbrock will defend his dissertation, entitled “Intelligent Decimation of River Geometry Data for Manageable Use in Surface-Water Models.”

Tuesday, Aug. 17
Be Bold in Boise: Grand Opening of the VandalStore

2 p.m. – 4 p.m.

The University of Idaho is bringing its Vandal pride to the Capital City. The VandalStore will a grand opening celebration of silver and gold for Idaho family, friends and fans. The Eastman Parking Garage entrance and exit on Idaho Street will be closed for the VandalStore celebration on Aug. 17 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Those planning to attend may park in the Eastman Garage, but plan on entering at Main Street and exiting at 9th Street. The first hour of parking is free; each additional hour is $2.50.

Wednesday, Aug. 18
Fraternity Recruitment Begins

Recruitment is the mutual selection process which students may go through to join a fraternity. Students will be able to meet members from every chapter, learn about the chapters' activities, tour the chapter facility, and figure out which fraternity is the right one for them. Thursday, Aug. 19
New Student Housing Check-In

Welcome Potluck: International Students, Honoring the LeTourneaus

The International Friends Association and the International Programs Office will host the annual Welcome Potluck for new international students. The potluck will honor Duane and Phyllis LeTourneau’s 25 years of support to students from the Isle of Man. Drinks, plates and utensils will be provided; attendees are asked to bring a salad, main dish or dessert to share. Welcome Convocation

President Duane Nellis, ASUI President Stephen Parrott and ASUI Vice President Samantha Storms will officially welcome students to campus. Introductory remarks will be followed with a keynote address by Jonathan Mooney, the Common Read author of the "The Short Bus: A Journey beyond normal." All students will receive a University of Idaho planner.

New Student Service Project: Serving Your New Community (SYNC)

Picnic on the Diversity, Equity and Community

Returning and new students are warmly invited to join the Diversity, Equity and Community units as they welcome students back to campus for the start of a new year. The event provides students with the opportunity to meet staff from the Women's Center, LGBTQA Office, College Assistance Migrant Program, Office of Multicultural Affairs, and Native American Student Center, and learn more about these offices and their affiliated student groups. New students gather at the Kibbie Dome where they are met by the University of Idaho President Duane Nellis, campus leaders and the University of Idaho Vandal Marching Band. New students receive a Vandal Game Day T-shirt; then the president leads students through campus to the Administration Lawn where the faculty will serve the new students dinner.
