Prichard Art Gallery Artist in Residence Open to the Public Presentation with Terra Graphics

Friday, February 17 2012 at 5:00 PM

Location: UI Prichard Art Gallery Children's Studio

From February 6-17 the Prichard Art Gallery will be the staging point for an artist-in-residency program with local schools in Moscow, Troy and Potlatch. Artist, Christine Destempres, is the director of Art for Water a non-profit organization drawing attention to the global water crisis through monumental, public participation art projects. She will present important information about water quality issues and help students understand the magnitude of the crisis through hands on activities in the classroom.

Their reflections will be sculpted into an installation for the gallery’s Uncommon Rivers exhibit opening Feb. 22. The artist and volunteers will be working in 5th and 6th grade classrooms, and at the junior and senior high schools. Local environmental agencies, like Terra Graphics, have also volunteered to help participants understand water quality issues by sharing their experiences with restoration and conservation projects.

This remarkable opportunity is made possible by funds from the Idaho Commission on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Latah Arts and Culture Committee and the University of Idaho. The Prichard Gallery’s Children’s Studio and art education outreach program works to create and maintain dynamic partnerships with our local educators through guided tours of the gallery and special extension projects. Feb. 17 at 2 and 5 p.m. open to the public presentations with the artist will take place in the Children’s Studio at the gallery (newly remodeled with help from the Women’s Giving Circle). Join us! The experience culminates in a River of Words expressing our community’s passion for art and the importance of environmental stewardship. If you would like to volunteer to help in a classroom, or donate to the expenses of the project please contact us at 885-3586. For questions regarding the educational outreach program please call the coordinator, Dona Black, at 882-5820.
