Jazz Choirs Holiday Concert Warms Up the Season
Friday, December 6 2013
MOSCOW, Idaho – The temperature outside has plunged past comfortable, but holiday cheer will warm thousands of concertgoers Friday, Dec. 13 inside the ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center during the Jazz Choirs Holiday Concert. The concert begins at 8 p.m. and is free, though donations of cash to benefit Sojourners’ Alliance of Moscow will be accepted at the door.
With musical selections from around the world encompassing seasonal holidays and traditions, the evening features the University of Idaho Jazz Choirs, who invited 700 local and regional elementary, junior high school and high school choir members to perform, along with the Alpine Carillons, the Holiday String Orchestra and Jazz Band IV.
“This concert has been a part of Moscow’s holiday tradition for so many years,” said Dan Bukvich, professor of music and holiday concert director. “It continues to offer local students the opportunity to work with university musicians in an exciting and high pressure environment.”
The musicians will have one rehearsal together before the big concert, which draws between 3,000-4,000 spectators. It’s a unique experience for non-university students to perform in front of a large audience and with so many other voices. In addition, singers in the Jazz Choir receive some of their music only days before the concert and university musicians receive music that day.
“It’s a great opportunity for university students to get a ‘real world’ feel for performing with limited rehearsal time,” said Bukvich. “For student who want to do this for a living, it’s an invaluable experience.”
Bukvich added while the holiday concert has become a tradition in the community over the last 25 years, there are always new elements, new performers and new audience members each year. Like previous years, Bukvich has composed and arranged music for the concert, encouraged students to compose interlude music between groups and invited faculty to perform during the concert.
“While there are some familiar aspects to the performance, there’s always something different along with classic favorites,” said Bukvich.
As the concert has become a tradition on campus, its reach extends far beyond Moscow. For those unable to attend, the concert will be live-streamed at www.uidaho.edu/live
Following the event, DVDs of the performance will be available for purchase at www.uidaho.edu/videostore
The Jazz Choirs Holiday Concert is presented by the University of Idaho Lionel Hampton School of Music and the Office of the President, with support of local business and community volunteers.
