Engineering Distinguished Speaker Series: Astronaut Steven Swanson

Monday, October 5 2009 at 4:00 PM

The 2009-10 Engineering Distinguished Speaker Series welcomes NASA astronaut Steven Ray Swanson for a public talk about highlights of the STS-1119 mission. The shuttle flight delivered the final pair of power-generating solar array wings and truss element to the space station. The delivery and installation of the station’s final, major U.S. truss segment, Starboard 6, signaled the station’s readiness to house a six-member crew for conducting increased science. With the installation of the 31,127-pound, 45.4-foot-long segment, the station’s completed truss, or backbone, measures 335 feet – more than the length of a football field.

The lecture on Monday, Oct. 5, at 4 p.m. is in the Administration Building, University Auditorium. His talk is free and open to the public. A reception follows. For more information: www.uidaho.edu/engr/events/astronautvisit.aspx
