Campus Core Has New Solid Waste Containers

Wednesday, August 22 2012

You may have noticed that the large blue and brown dumpsters are gone from the core of the campus. They have been replaced by two-yard tow or toter units. This change in our solid waste collection program allows us to collect exact tonnage information for all Gen Ed solid waste and better deal with escalating solid waste costs.

As a reminder, only Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is allowed to go into the new toter units. MSW is defined as any solid waste produced, other than hazardous, infectious or unacceptable waste. Unacceptable waste or waste not allowed in tow units at the University of Idaho includes any hazardous or infectious materials (ie, blood, body wastes, paints, spray cans, liquids, toxic substances, pesticides, oils, chemicals etc.) Other unacceptable waste includes furniture, electronic waste, and construction debris. For items of these natures either Environmental Safety & Health (5-6524) or Recycling/Surplus Solid Waste (5-2091) will need to be contacted for proper disposal of these unacceptable items.

It is against city and state code to put these types of items in the MSW stream, and we risk substantial fines for non-compliance, so please adhere to the guidelines. Unacceptable waste found in tow units will be removed and the owning department contacted for proper disposal. One last item… loose trash and packing peanuts are easily windblown… all trash of this type should be bagged prior to disposal in a tow unit. For questions, call 885-2091.
