Idaho Vandal Becomes Top Marine

The United States Senate has confirmed General James F. Amos as the 35th Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps.

At the University of Idaho, Amos was a dedicated member of the ROTC. He graduated in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in finance/business and economics. Immediately afterward he was designated a naval aviator and has moved his way up the military ladder. Now, 40 years later, General Amos is the first career aviation officer to hold the top marine post.

“The University of Idaho congratulates Gen. James Amos on his confirmation as the commandant of the United State Marine Corps,” said President Duane Nellis. “The University of Idaho has a legacy of educating leaders and General Amos is a perfect example. We are proud of his commitment to his country and we expect he will be an extraordinary leader of the Marine Corp. He is among the many prominent university alumni who serve this state and nation in both the private and public sectors.”

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates nominated General Amos for the position. He will be taking over for retiring General James T. Conway who has served since 2006.

General Amos was featured in the winter 2009 Here We Have Idaho magazine. Amos, a dedicated Vandal, was said to be known for displaying a University of Idaho banner in his office. From school spirit to academics, he’s also a strong supporter of the University’s Operation Education Scholarship Program, launched in 2006.

Amos is slated to be sworn in during an Oct. 22 ceremony at Marine Barracks Washington.
