U of I Presents ‘Every Brilliant Thing’ for World Suicide Awareness Day

August 31, 2023

MOSCOW, Idaho — In recognition of World Suicide Awareness Day, University of Idaho will host two performances of the life-affirming play “Every Brilliant Thing” at 7 p.m. Sept. 16, and 2 p.m. Sept. 17, in the Forge Theater.

“Every Brilliant Thing,” written by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe, conveys life’s struggles and celebrates its sweetness. The 60-minute play stars U of I Assistant Professor Craig A. Miller and will be followed by a Q&A session with representatives from the Dean of Students Office, Vandal Health Education, and the Counseling and Mental Health Center.

The performances are sponsored by the Dean of Students Office, Vandal Health Education and Idaho Repertory Theatre.

“It is not often that media portrayals of mental health get it right, but this show is full of hope, help and strength,” said Amanda Ferstead, assistant director of Health Promotion at Student Health Services.

This is the second consecutive year that “Every Brilliant Thing” is being produced at U of I in connection to suicide awareness.

“We are thrilled to be able to bring this extraordinarily funny and moving play back for this very important day of awareness,” said Robert Caisley, chair of the Department of Theatre Arts. “Theatre has the power to heal, and we hope audiences will enjoy this command performance as much as we have enjoyed bringing it back to the Forge Theater.”

The shows are free, and tickets can be reserved online.

The Forge Theater is located at 404 Sweet Ave.
