UI College of Law Hosts Idaho Teachers’ Institute on Law-Related Civic Education

June 13, 2017

The University of Idaho College of Law will host the 2017 Idaho Teachers’ Institute on Law-Related Civic Education June 15-16 at the Idaho Law & Justice Learning Center in Boise. The Institute is a program developed in cooperation with Idaho’s federal and state courts. Teachers from across Idaho are attending, including Hayden, Terreton, Chubbuck, Malad City, Blackfoot, Fruitland, Grangeville and Idaho Falls.

The institute combines presentations by lawyers, judges, academics and journalists with teacher-to-teacher workshops designed to help the participants develop instructional materials they can use in their classrooms. This year, participants will have the opportunity to hear oral argument in the case challenging Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter’s veto of a bill repealing the sales tax on groceries in Idaho.

This year, topics will vary from the “rule of law”; distinctive features of the U.S. Constitution, including the independent and impartial judiciary; the judge’s role as guardian of the national and state constitutions; the judge’s dual tasks of interpreting and following the law; public perceptions and occasional misunderstandings of the judiciary; and current challenges in the administration of criminal justice.

Presenters include:

  • Former Idaho Supreme Court Chief Justice Jim Jones
  • Idaho Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger S. Burdick
  • Idaho Supreme Court Justice Robyn Brody
