The name TRiO refers to three educational assistance programs funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965. Congress established Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search, and Student Support Services to help low income and first generation students to overcome class and social barriers to higher education. These three programs formed the Federal TRiO programs and over the next 18 years, Congress added four programs and all seven TRiO programs assist first generation and low income students attain post-secondary degrees.
