1. Why should I take the Compass Test?
Take the Compass Test if you feel that your SAT or ACT math score does
not reflect your current ability in Mathematics. This will be especially
true if your ACT and SAT scores are old. You want to be sure that you are
adequately prepared for the Math course that you take.
2. What is the Compass Test?
The Compass Math Test is a standardized computer exam that tests your
knowledge in Algebra, College Algebra and Trigonometry. Your score on
this test, along with your SAT and ACT math scores, are used for placing
you in beginning math courses at the University of Idaho.
3. Where can I take the Compass Test?
You can take the test on campus at the UI Counseling and Testing Center,
306 Continuing Education Building, (208) 885-6716. Just drop by any time
before 4:00 p.m. It is also given at all Universities and Colleges in Idaho,
and at many Universities and Colleges in the United States. Ask them to
forward your results to the UI Admissions Office.

5. What do the scores on the Compass Test mean?
- If Math 143 is required for your major and your Compass Algebra score
is less than 61, or your College Algebra score is less than 45, you
need to take Math 108 to prepare for 143.
- If your Algebra score is at least 61, or your College Algebra score
is at least 45, you can take Math 143.
- To take Math 160 your College Algebra score needs to be at least 49.
- To take Math 170 your College Algebra score needs to be at least 51
and your Trigonometry score needs to be at least 51.
Note: If your major requires Math 170 and your College Algebra
score is less than 51 you should take Math 143 to prepare for 170.
6. Will a good score on the practice exam mean that
I will do well on the Compass Test?
Probably, but it's not a guarantee. The questions on the practice exam
may test one aspect of a topic where your version of the Compass Test
asks a question about another aspect of the topic. For instance, you
need to know a lot about solving linear equations. A textbook will have
several types of questions in this section and only one will be selected
to be on an exam. If you have any difficulty with a topic you should
