A more interdisciplinary university

• Encourage research activities across department units and with WSU
• Center for race, ethnicity and gender studies
• Can we combine scholarly activity & outreach with service offices (e.g. helping low income communities in academic outreach areas with admission and financial aid to help low income students from that community access college
• Joint appointments across colleges, across units, and across universities
• More focus on applied research
• Expand/utilize extension and service learning services to develop and promote active, healthy communities. Communities can be university, local, state, regional, global. This work can be driven throughout our university curricula- inherently creates outreach and should result in grant procurement and scholarship. Addresses global and national health care concerns with focus on prevention. An integral piece of sustainability. Connects us globally – should pull together multiple disciplines across campus.
• Divorce scholarly/research programs from structure required to support accredited undergrad programs
• Urban research
• Provide incentives – course relief, etc.
• Develop metrics for success
• Elimination of traditional departments, form units based on priorities
• Support/encourage novel-focused research clusters
• Strengthening of things like “dancers, drummers, dreamers.”
• Keep the institutes independent of colleges
• Develop umbrella commitment across all core areas
• Integrative advancement of interdisciplinary in focus areas
• Develop signature programs – create common spaces for interaction
• Build research teams within different departments
