A more entrepreneurial university
Emphasize impact of research on state and region
Encourage pursuit of outside funding for research – especially to support student involvement
Assistance in grant writing, navigating through processes at NSF, NIH, etc. – collegiate or university level, hire more grant writers
Research expo at undergraduate/graduate level
Give credit for entrepreneurship
Base decisions on level of acceptable risk
Encourage engineering outreach type initiatives
Lead in fields where we can contribute to expo on research @ UI
Continue/enhance patent and licensing of research products
We have to be in the business of identifying marketing, management and revenue of our IP or collaborative IP = money from industry
Streamline proposal and grants accounting processes & provide more flexibility in expenditures
Willingness to change our offered majors – don’t just cut majors – make them current/real (change them to the market for our students and our world).
Internal research expo but invite NS science/math teachers for PR
Dedicated student learning space (library remodel)
Scholarship on urban ecosystems /transportation/development patterns, surface water management
Create cross-discipline seminars for both students, faculty, & community
Redirect F&A return to college and faculty of origin (increase incentives)
Increase seed grant funds for novel (& therefore riskier) ideas
Support/encourage small business spin-offs (make it easier)
Focus on societal problems w/tech transfer &trademark attributes
Look for STTR proposal opportunities – ties w/regional industry
Better integration of external & regional campuses
More support for grant preparation (budgets/paperwork)
Public/private partnerships
Protect or free up faculty time for research
Focus hires on critical areas
Put our research results to set up small business & collaborations with large companies
