Bellwood Lecture Centers on Justice for All in a Changing America

Morris DeesThe 2013 Sherman J. Bellwood Lecture will feature the national civil rights lawyer, Morris Dees. The lecture is entitled, “With Justice for All in a Changing America” and will take place on October 8th at 3:30 p.m. in the University of Idaho Student Union Ballroom. A reception and comments from Mr. Dees are also planned in Boise on October 7th at 5:30 p.m. at the Boise Centre.

Mr. Dees is the co-founder and chief trial counsel for the Southern Poverty Law Center. His career spans four decades of groundbreaking civil rights cases brought around the country. Mr. Dees is known in Idaho for the work his Center did spearheading the legal initiatives to remove the Aryan nation’s presence in Northern Idaho.

Mr. Dees was named one of the 100 most influential lawyers in America by the National Law Journal in 2006. He founded the Intelligence Project, which monitors hate groups and develops legal strategies for protecting citizens from violence prone groups.  He also developed an educational program called “Teaching Tolerance,” which is used in more than 80,000 schools nationwide.

Both the Moscow and Boise programs are free and open to the public. The Sherman J. Bellwood Memorial Lecture is made possible by an endowed gift from Judge Bellwood which created this lecture series as a joint program between the College of Law, the Idaho State Bar and the Idaho Supreme Court.

Professor Pat Costello Retires from the College of Law

Pat CostelloThe University of Idaho College of Law recently said good-bye to visiting professor Patrick D. Costello. During his time as visiting professor, Costello supervised the General Practice/Domestic Violence Clinic, co-supervised the Mediation Clinic, and taught Trial Advocacy. In previous years he taught Professional Responsibility, The Lawyering Process (Pre-trial Civil Procedure), Tax Clinic and Pro Se Clinic. Professor Costello earned his bachelor’s degree at Kansas University and his J.D. at Boston University.

Professor Costello was a member of the Supreme Court’s “Protecting Children Committee” and coauthor of the “Idaho Protocol for Protecting Children of High Conflict Divorce.” In addition, he compiled the “Idaho Benchguide and Clerk's Manual” CD-ROM, published by Westgroup for the Idaho judiciary.

Before joining the law school faculty, Professor Costello served as a magistrate judge in Clearwater County, Idaho, for seven years. During that time, he also worked as an adjunct faculty member for the University of Idaho College of Law and Lewis-Clark State College. Professor Costello practiced law in Boise for twelve years, which included serving as legal counsel to Governors John Evans and Cecil Andrus. He also founded the law firm Park, Costello and Burkett.

During his career, Professor Costello has earned numerous awards, including the Award of Distinction from the Family Law Section of the Idaho State Bar in 1999. He received “Public Citizen of the Year” from the North Branch of the Idaho Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (1999), “Outstanding Young Man of Idaho,” from the Idaho Jaycees (1983), and “Best Broadcast News Series of the Year,” presented by the Idaho Press Club (1978).

Professor Costello’s outreach projects include serving as a Legal Education Specialist for the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative in Amman, Jordan, in 2008, and as a Legal Education Specialist for the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative in Prishtina, Kosovo, in 2010.  In addition to his earlier awards, Professor Costello received the FIDA (Faculty International Development Award) from the University Studies Abroad Consortium in Puntarenas, Costa Rica in 2009.
