April 3, 2017 - First Monday

Spring weather is right around the corner and as dean of the University of Idaho College of Law, I feel fortunate to be able to report to all our First Monday subscribers the great things happening at our law school.

Congratulations to Professor Wendy Couture on her promotion to professor of law, and to Associate Professors David Pimental and Sarah Haan on being granted tenure. We would like to also congratulate Professor Annemarie Bridy on her selection to receive the University Mid-Career Faculty Award. This award was established in 2012 to acknowledge faculty who have demonstrated a commitment to outstanding scholarship, teaching and engagement. This is a well-deserved recognition for one of our leading scholars and professors.

First Year in Boise Update

We are thrilled to announce that the American Bar Association has approved a first-year program in Boise starting in fall 2017. This is the final step in opening up a three-year program in Boise. We will welcome our inaugural first-year class this fall to the capital city. We have more than a century of experience providing our students an affordable, high-quality legal education that prepares them for success. We are delighted to now make our outstanding career training more accessible for students from Idaho and beyond. The Boise location complements our Moscow location, giving students the option to tailor their educations to their interests.

A special thank you to our Law Advisory Council for its leadership and advocacy on behalf of the effort. Also, thank you to our alumni and donors whose support helped create the space for our Boise program at the Idaho Law and Justice Learning Center. We’d specifically like to thank our leadership donors – The Laura Moore Cunningham Foundation; Frank Shrontz ’54; Jeker Family Trust; Ahrens & DeAngeli Law Group – Ed Ahrens ’71; Justice Linda Copple Trout ’77; Bevis Thiry and Schindele P.A., Holden Kidwell, Hahn & Crapo PLLC – Chuck Homer ‘74; Dwight Baker ’71; and Donald and Karen Burnett.

US News and World Report

In March, U.S. News and World Report released its list of the top law schools in the nation. The UI College of Law continued its upward trajectory, moving up two spots to 109th. The college was also recognized as a top law school for diversity in the student body through the diversity index. Aside from being the only ranked law school in Idaho, UI is also ahead of many Northwest and Mountain West law schools.

2017 Idaho Critical Legal Studies Journal Annual Symposium

The University of Idaho and the Idaho Critical Legal Studies Journal will host their annual symposium, The Gavel Gap: Promoting Diversity in Idaho’s Judiciary on Friday, April 15, 2017. The symposium will be from 12:30 - 5:30 p.m. Mountain Time at the Idaho Law and Justice Center in Boise and will be streamed to Room 215 in the Menard Law building. This symposium will not only explore challenges to diversity and methods to promote diversity within our schools, legal profession and judiciary, but also celebrate the achievements of female and multicultural judges in Idaho. Our panelists include various members of Idaho’s judiciary, Legislature, and state bar. The Honorable Debra Stephens, a justice on the Washington Supreme Court, will deliver a keynote address on her path to Washington’s judiciary. This symposium is free and open to the public.

Three hours of CLE credit pending.

For more information or to RSVP, email law-symposium@uidaho.edu.

2017 Idaho Law Review Symposium

The 2017 Idaho Law Review Symposium, Livestock Grazing on Public Lands: Law, Policy & Rebellion, was a success. We had 147 registered attendees and 120 watching from the livestream. The event brought many differing views into the same room to have a much-needed conversation. Thanks to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management for sponsoring. Thanks also to Kaycee Royer and Jenal Barcelos, the student symposium team for this year. Idaho Public Television will archive the footage from the event.

Faculty and Staff Updates

We also are wishing a fond farewell to a few of our faculty and staff. Terri Muse, assistant dean for external relations, retired on March 31. She has built a successful development program and we are grateful for her many contributions in growing the strength of our alumni network and guiding our successful fundraising efforts. She is leaving on a high note; financial year 2017 will be our best fundraising year ever due to our loyal annual giving group, plus some special major gifts that closed this fiscal year.

Elaine Kempton, our long time clinic services coordinator in Boise, will be retiring after 18 years with the College of Law. Associate Professor Sarah Haan will also be leaving us at the end of the year for an opportunity at Washington & Lee University. She has contributed greatly to UI College of Law. Most recently her article "Shareholder Proposal Settlements and the Private Ordering of Public Elections" was the lead article in volume 126, number two of the Yale Law Journal.

We have started searches for these positions and have people in place to support our initiatives and events until these positions are filled.

Have a great April,

Mark Adams
Dean
University of Idaho College of Law
