Past Chief Justice, Idaho Supreme Court
"The University of Idaho has played a central role in my life. All told, I spent seven years on the Moscow campus, first as an undergraduate and later as a law student.
"Idaho exposed me to a vast range of people, cultures, disciplines, and ideas. My professors challenged my beliefs and abilities and, in doing so, sharpened my analytical skills and broadened my intellectual horizons.
"The College of Law encouraged independent thought and rewarded original work. This aspect of my education has stood me in good stead, not only in my time as an attorney in private practice, but also as a trial judge. Teamwork represented the essence of my position as Justice of the Idaho Supreme Court, where I worked to resolve difficult legal issues with four other justices. Working in a team environment, one learns both to make an individual contribution and to respect and value the different viewpoints of other team members. One soon finds that a diversity of ideas does not present a roadblock to the solution of a problem, but rather provides more possible resolutions."
