Self-Help: Installing Office 2011

Installing Office 2011

This tutorial applies to the following operating system(s):

Employees with the University of Idaho are provided Microsoft Office Pro Plus at no extra cost as part of their Office 365 email account. This tutorial will assist you in downloading and installing Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac through Office 365.

Step 1: Change your License

Please note: Step 1 is only for Faculty and Staff. Students are automatically licensed for Microsoft Office Pro Plus.

Navigate to the Account Management page at and log in using your NetID username and password. Once logged in, use the menu to the right to select University Software and then Office 365 License.

This link will take you to the Office365 license page, which will show your account and give you the option to upgrade to an A3 license. You must upgrade your account before being able to download Office 2011 for Mac.

Step 2: Log in to OWA

Navigate and log in to Office 365 by going to (for faculty/staff) or (for students) and log in.

Once logged in, click the gear icon at the top-right of the page and select Office 365 settings, then software from the menu that comes up to be taken to the Office 365 software page.

Step 3: Download

The Office 365 software screen will have a link to download Office, as well as a list of the machines that have Office associated with your account. You can install Microsoft Office Pro Plus on up to five machines concurrently using your account. This screen will also allow you to deactivate a Office installation from an old machine.

To download Office Pro Plus, click the install button.

Step 4: Install

Double-click the downloaded file to begin installation. Office 2011 for Mac will begin installing. The first screen you will see will ask you "how would you like to get started". Click sign-in with an existing Office 365 subscription.

You will be asked to enter your full email address, and then your NetID password, after which point the installation should begin.

While Office is installing, you will be asked to fill out your first and last name to personalize Office, as well as to keep Office up to date and participate in the customer experience program. While all of these are optional and you can click through the screens, we strongly recommend checking yes to Keep Office for Mac up to date.
